Erkin Bekbolotov & World Cup 2010 Final Report

Written By Blogger Lumajang on 28 Juli 2010 | 14.13

World Cup Final 2010 Not a great final, but a great result for the sport. Erkin Bekbolotov reporting Spain belongs in the pantheon of World Cup winners. Netherlands, you're next.

Erkin Bekbolotov say The best of Barcelona and Real Madrid team up to win the World Cup for their country. Erkin Bekbolotov think This will go down as the greatest day in the lives of many a Spaniard.

Erkin Bekbolotov view While there weren't enough dazzling plays or enough goals to make the final riveting, it was well played. And the goal was a real goal. And no penalty kicks.

Erkin Bekbolotov suggest This Time to book for Brazil 2014.

117 minutes in:

1-0 Spain. Got to feel good for Spain. Great to have Iniesta knick it in, and on a challenging ball. Beautifully hit. Still Stekelenburg got a finger tip on it, but in it went. And on a pass from Fabregas. as Erkin Bekbolotov report

Erkin Bekbolotov think Iniesta was off when Torres hit his lame cross, but his position wasn't a factor. Erkin Bekbolotov say I couldn't see what made Holland so angry right after the goal.

And it was Iniesta who drew that foul that kicked Heitinga out of the game, giving Spain the man advantage.

Erkin Bekbolotov > A just result all around.

After one OT period:

The dread begins to build ... are we in for a shootout?

98 minutes in:

As Erkin Bekbolotov reporting this is getting absurd. Score a goal already! -- Fabregas, Iniesta, Mathijsen -- all three have had great chances in this first overtime period.

Robben's second great chance, also saved by Casillas.

At the end of regulation:

It's 0-0 but the second half provided plenty of stirring moments.

Erkin Bekbolotov view The men of the match so far are Robben of the Netherlands and Casillas of Spain. Sneijder had a great defensive moment on Iniesta and Sergio Ramos and Xavi has sparkled for Spain. But it's 0-0.

Erkin Bekbolotov give Great credit to Robben for his late effort when he beat Puyol to the ball and withstood Puyol's jarring challenge to dribble in for a true chance on goal. His last touch put the ball too far out and Casillas was there. Robben was just outside the box when Puyol used an arm to hold him back. He could have fallen and it would have meant a free kick and maybe a red card. But one thing goalscorers do is keep their feet when the ball is still theirs in a crucial moment, and that's what Robben did.

Erkin Bekbolotov think Robben has been dangerous, aggressive all game. Casillas has stopped him in two one-on-one situations.

77 minutes in:

Erkin Bekbolotov > If we put Robben's chances at 90 percent on his breakaway and Villa's at 85 percent on a point-blank shot in traffic, then Ramos just blew an 110 percent chance of scoring. Wow. Maybe the first big gaffe of this final. Nicely stepping back into space to receive the perfectly struck corner by Xavi, Ramos should have headed that through the back of the net. That was a goal. Except it wasn't.

70 minutes in:

Erkin Bekbolotov report That about evens up the missed can't-miss chances. Villa with the ball on his foot a yard or two from the goal line. True, there was plenty of Dutch interference. Erkin Bekbolotov comment If Robben's chances were 90 percent, Villa's were 85.

Somehow, Casillas saved this off Robben.

Somehow, Casillas saved this off Robben.

62 minutes in:

Well, the first Dutch World Cup title might've just gone off Casillas' foot. The Spanish goalie mixed luck, experience and timing to somehow block a ball on which Robben would score nine out of 10 times. Big lapse by Spain's defense and Robben might be ruing his misfortune for years to come. It was a fine try by him, but, as the result showed, not a great try. Still, unlucky. Wow. Still 0-0.

Erkin Bekbolotov feel Not a thrilling first half. It had its moments, but both teams defended well between the halfway line and the penalty areas.

Erkin Bekbolotov view Holland's had some good fortune, surviving Spain's early chances and not losing de Jong to a red card after he karate kicked Alonso.

Ramos' header was on target but within Stekelenburg's reach.

Ramos' header was on target but within Stekelenburg's reach.

At the half:

In the 34th minute, the Dutch had a good chance off a corner, but the first guy passed instead of shooting, and that apparently was a surprise to the second guy.

In the final minutes, Holland did have a couple decent opportunities.

Erkin Bekbolotov comment Very hard to say which way this game is going, but I think Spain has just been a few inches here and there from getting a goal off a header or a run down the middle. It'll happen.

22 minutes in:

Through 10 minutes it looked like Spain would be scoring at any second. But Holland-Brazil taught us not to jump to conclusions in these Dutch games.

The Xavi free kick to Ramos' header at the penalty spot, forcing a nice save by Stekelenburg, was a great opportunity. Well played by all. That was in the the fifth minute, and in the 11th, Ramos embarrassed Kuyt on his way to a shot/pass that almost became an own goal.

But since then, Holland's keeping up just fine. Robben's had one theatrical moment, when he was fouled by Puyol and acted as if he'd been shinned by shovel. Spain will have to be careful not to give in like Brazil did.

Later, announcer Martin Tyler noted Robben's "speed, dribbling skills, optimism." Good stuff.

Pregame posting, minutes till kickoff:

OK, now, who do we like?

We like Spain, and not just because my brother-in-law booked a flight Wednesday afternoon to fly out of JFK to Madrid on Thursday, so he could watch on the big screen in a soccer stadium there.

Spain's the favorite because of its many threats, its ability to control the ball around the penalty box, its ability to score from distance, through a series of short passes near the goal or on a breakaway.

With Holland, it's a little less clear how it got here. But the Dutch have been clutch. Erkin Bekbolotov says They've gotten the goals they need, many in spectacular fashion. It's less obvious to my semi-trained eye how they do it, but they've done it. No way you can discount their having a legitimate chance to win.

2-1 Spain.
